Editorial standards

How we make recommendations.

Fantasy Compass combines a consistent classification model with editorial judgment. This page explains what the scores mean, how guides are researched and how errors are corrected.

Editorial responsibility

Articles are published under the byline Fantasy Compass Editorial Team. Each guide has a visible review date and source record. Anders B. Christensen is the creator of Fantasy Compass and is responsible for the project's product and editorial direction.

How books are classified

Every full book profile uses the same Fantasy Fit Matrix definitions. Scored axes, ordered categories, taxonomy tags, audience, content advisories and series commitment are kept separate so that one signal does not silently stand in for another. The public Matrix guide defines the model and its limits.

How recommendations are ranked

Calculated fit measures similarity across the Matrix. A guide can adjust the weight of specific dimensions to match its stated reader question. Editorial order can differ from raw similarity when commitment, accessibility, series status or another practical tradeoff changes where a reader should start. When that happens, the article explains the difference in the recommendation itself.

Sources and verification

Profiles and guides use primary sources where available, including publishers and official author websites. Reputable secondary references may be used to verify publication details or clarify context. Sources used for classification are listed in the editorial record on the relevant page.

Independence and commercial influence

Rankings are not sold. Fantasy Compass does not accept payment for a higher score or a preferred position. Any future sponsorship, review copy or affiliate relationship that could be relevant to a reader will be disclosed clearly.

Updates and corrections

The archive is updated when new books, better evidence or classification problems change a recommendation. Material updates receive a new review date. Readers can report factual errors, broken links or disputed classifications through the contact and corrections form.

Use of assisted tools

Software and AI-assisted tools may support research organization, consistency checks, drafting and code. Published classifications and recommendations remain subject to editorial review against the stated method and cited sources.
