The three viewpoints begin separately and share a warrior culture, but each has a distinct motive: family rescue, earned reputation, or vengeance. Their convergence supplies much of the first book’s structure.
The violence is frequent and physical. A loyal, sometimes hopeful view of companionship keeps the book from being wholly nihilistic, but its reading experience remains firmly dark.
